Elephants are the biggest animals on land.
They have large ears, long trunks, and thick grey skin. Elephants are very smart and can remember things for a long time!

Types of Elephants
There are three main types of elephants:
African Elephants
Found in Africa
Bigger in size
Ears are shaped like the African continent
Asian Elephants
Found in Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, etc.)
Smaller than African elephants
Ears are smaller and rounder
Forest Elephants (a type of African elephant)
Live in African rainforests
Smaller than other African elephants
Fun Fact:
African elephants have bigger ears than Asian elephants.
Their big ears help them stay cool in the hot sun!
Elephant Body Parts and Their Uses
Elephants have amazing body parts that help them do many things!
Trunk
The trunk is like a long nose with over 40,000 muscles!
Elephants use it to smell, drink water, grab things, and even greet friends!
Example:
An elephant can pick up a peanut or a big tree branch with its trunk.
Tusks
Tusks are long teeth made of ivory.
Elephants use them to dig, peel bark from trees, and protect themselves.
Note: Not all elephants have tusks.
Female Asian elephants usually don’t have tusks.
Ears
Help elephants hear
Also act like fans to cool their bodies
Feet
Big, round feet that help carry their weight
Soft padding helps them walk quietly
What Do Elephants Eat?
Elephants are herbivores.
That means they only eat plants!
They eat:
Grass
Leaves
Fruits
Bark from trees
Roots

An adult elephant can eat more than 100 kg (220 pounds) of food in a day!
Daily Life of an Elephant
Elephants love to:
Eat a lot!
Bathe in rivers or mud
Play with other elephants
Walk many kilometers to find food and water
Example:
Elephants use their trunks to splash water and cool themselves during a bath.
Elephant Families
Elephants live in groups called herds.
These herds are led by the oldest and wisest female elephant, called the matriarch.
In a herd:
Females and babies stay together
Males leave the herd when they grow up

Baby elephants drink their mother’s milk for up to 2 years and are very playful.
